The story of Gangdhara began not with a plan, but with a question: Why were some of our students at the Ballygunge centre struggling after migrating from Bihar? These children had moved to Kolkata in search of better learning opportunities, but what we saw broke our hearts—they were living alone, away from their joint families and comfort of their native villages and battling challenges no child should face.
Determined to understand the root cause, we connected with their families in Gangdhara, a small village in Madhubani, Bihar. What we found was eye-opening: the village had a literacy rate of barely 32%, minimal access to quality education, and social barriers that kept children—especially girls—away from school. Amid these challenges, we discovered two dedicated local teachers who were already trying to improve literacy with very limited resources. That was our turning point.
The Beginning: Training Before Teaching
Rather than imposing a system, we decided to strengthen what already existed. During COVID, when the world was on pause, GDF began an intensive 6–8 month online training program for these two teachers—introducing them to our pedagogy, structured curriculum, and daily lesson plans. This training became the foundation of Gangdhara’s transformation and Gyan Deepak’s online Teacher’s Training Module.

Building More Than a Classroom
Once the centre became fully operational, practical challenges began to surface. Frequent power cuts, lack of clean water, and long commutes were affecting learning. GDF responded by going beyond academics:
We installed solar panels to ensure uninterrupted classes.
We dug a borewell, supporting not just students but local farmers—because education thrives when the whole community grows.
We introduced an auto commute service, enabling children from five nearby villages to attend regularly and safely.
We initiated a banana plantation project, ensuring a sustainable source of daily nutrition for our students while promoting community self-reliance.
The Impact Today
Gangdhara is now a thriving education hub:
Over 120 students, many first-generation learners.
A growing team of trained local teachers empowered through GDF’s training model.
Rising enrollments from surrounding villages, with improved attendance and community trust.
A classroom that runs not on privilege, but on perseverance and purpose.
What started as a concern for a few children in Kolkata became a movement of change in rural Bihar—giving children access to learning, confidence, and a future their parents once thought impossible.
Gangdhara: More Than a Centre
In Gangdhara, we didn’t just open a classroom—we planted hope. A hope that is now blooming in the laughter of children, in the pride of parents, and in the leadership of teachers who once doubted their own potential.
This is GDF’s belief in action: change begins when you care enough to listen—and stays when you work to uplift an entire community.
